Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.
The battle of Mizpeh or Mizpah is recognized as the first major victory under Samuel’s leadership.
After 20 years of Philistine domination, Samuel rallied the people at Mizpeh.
With God’s help a major victory was accomplished, Samuel built a memorial stone and called it Ebenezer(stone of help).
Stones represented gratitude and memorials for what God had done, Points of references for what God has done.
Samuel went on the recover territories, subdue enemies, the people had a long period of peace at one point under Samuels leadership.
Samuel is well recognized as one of the greatest leaders in bible, it all started with that one victory and having gratitude, knowing that he could not do it without God’s help.
