The Power Of A Song

Psalm 137:4(KJV)

How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a strange land?

The writer of Psalm 137 is reflecting on the Israelites being in captivity.

They were far away from home, some theologians believe it to be a 600-900 miles distance, some up to 1700 miles depending on the route.

It took about 4 months on foot, under difficult conditions, displaced from their way of life.

Although they were not treated horrible all the time in Babylon, they suffered and the sadness of being in a strange land.

Strange Land – Living in a land that is not your own, being forced to from one’s homeland.

Dislocation, hope for something better, not living in God’s divine promises.

Strange land can also represent just going through a bad season of your life, bad circumstances, health conditions, financial conditions, relationships or friendships issues.

Strange land for Christians is knowing and believing that this is not our permanent home, believing that we are going to a better place.

During black slavery many songs were made, many spiritual songs sung to get them through the day.

The Power Of A Song – A song has a unique ability to affect our human emotions, mood elevation, memory and nostalgia.

Songs can help in hard times:

1. Singing can lower stress and anxiety, calm your nervous system.

2. Singing can boost your mood, promote feeling of well being and help with emotions.

3. Singing can help you express your feelings and helps process pain and trauma.

4. Singing can help us change our focus from our problems to our promises.

5. Singing can calm the body

Whether it is Singing alone in the car, shower, while cooking or cleaning.

Whether it’s Singing in group at church, during a Spin class or exercise class, helps you connect with others and helps yourself.

Sometimes sad songs that make you cry can help you to feel better by releasing your emotions.

Singing can be a great self care or self help tool, and it’s totally free.

I sing the LORD’s songs, but I also love other songs, whatever is edifying for you.

The Power Of A Song, it’s a great way for us to encourage ourselves in hard times.

A song also helps us to celebrate the good times.
