Groupthink

Exodus 23:2(ERV)

Don’t do something just because everyone else is doing it. If you see a group of people doing wrong, don’t join them. You must not let them persuade you to do wrong things- you must do what is right and fair.

We live in a world now where it seems like once you become part of something, whether it is a religion, political party, or social group, you have to be all in with the thoughts and actions of that group.

Groupthink – Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon where the desire for Group cohesion overrides rational decision making, leads to conformity, suppressed dissent, and poor collective actions.

In Christianity the bible teaches us not to believe everything others say, 1 John 4:1, or not to be conformed to everything, romans 12:2.

Having a need to belong can become toxic when it overrides our own morals and personal likes and convictions.

The bible speaks of unity in the faith, but we can be unified and different.

Unity – Unity is voluntarily coming together for a specific task or purpose, nothing force. We all can have our own personalities as long as we respect each other.

Unity encourages growth and personal thinking, critical thinking.

Conformity – Conformity is having to think like the group, talk like the group, and act like the group.

God created us all different, we all have different experiences, back grounds, knowledge and when we come together as oasis a group it can be powerful.

Groupthink doesn’t allow critical thinking, causes you to dislike anyone that is not like you.

Eventually you can find yourself doing bad things and justifying it. We can find ourselves treating other people groups certain ways and justifying it.

Never let your need to be part of something causes us to hate, talk bad about, or look down upon others.

We don’t have to always agree but we can get along with each other.
